NBYA Regatta for the Swanson Cup & Bay Challenge Cup

Twenty-two boats met in the middle of Narragansett Bay to battle for club pride in the NBYA Regatta for the Swanson Cup (Spinnaker) and Bay Challenge Cup (Non-Spinnaker), with Halfway Rock serving as the rendezvous point.

Three clubs fielded teams in the spinnaker division—Barrington, Bristol, and Sail Newport—while Barrington, Bristol, and Spar Island Sailing Association competed for the non-spinnaker title.

It was a Chamber of Commerce day—at least if you were on a powerboat. The wind forecast for the noon-to-4:00 p.m. racing window was bleak, and unfortunately it proved accurate. The Bristol Race Committee did everything it could to get a course set and start the fleet in a dying northerly. One race was completed, although much of the fleet received a helpful push from the current to make it through the finish on the final leg.

The anticipated southerly never arrived in time to get another race underway. For next year, we will strongly consider expanding the racing window to give the race committee more flexibility around Narragansett Bay’s wind vagaries.

Barrington Yacht Club successfully defended the Bay Challenge Cup, with Hoot, Caneel, and Gulliver representing the club.

Sail Newport captured the Swanson Cup, represented by Rhody Red, Slim Shady, and Freebird.

Congratulations to both winning teams, and thank you to Bristol Yacht Club and its Race Committee for making the most of a very challenging day.
